Wawrinka’s Social Media Game

COVID-19 has affected everything. That includes tennis games, tournaments, players, players finances, fans, etc. Like most of us, tennis top players are quarantined and trying to retain their form. But amongst all this uncertainty, fear, and death, these infectious times have woken up the creativity for some of them. In our opinion, one of the most creative social media games of these Covid-19 times comes from one of the best backhands’ of the ATP Tour: Stan Wawrinka.

The three times Grand Slam Champion – Australian Open 2014, Roland Garros 2015, and US Open 2016 – has been on fire on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. After the cancellation of Indian Wells, he left Los Angeles, California to head back home. While at the beginning of his stay at home his posts were about cooking, training and motivating his followers to stay safe and healthy, it all took an interesting turn on March 21.

The first post that got our attention appeared on his Instagram account on March 23. Stan posted the first picture from what we will call his “Multiple Stan’s Series”. You can definitely have fun with this image that portrays Wawrinka in his unique 2015 Roland Garros outfit, sleeping, playing videogames, having a glass of wine, sitting on his couch looking bored, and even in what seems to be an argument with the TV or even himself.

While these playful images are filled with creativity and certainly make us smile and entertain us, we believe there’s more to this series of pictures and videos of multiple Stans. Perhaps there’s a deeper existential side to them.

There’s this video working out with his “workout partners” with whom he shared a lot in common that day. These workout partners seem to be also his birthday buddies because being alone didn’t stop him from celebrating his birthday on March 28.

If you give a closer look to the Multiple Stans’ Series, in addition to the creativity and fun you will also find loneliness, exhaustion, uncertainty, and pain. On what seemed to be a tough day, one of his workout partners – maybe a new coach?! – gave him a much needed pep talk during his workout of April 13. At the end, to experience different emotions and moods is an integral part of  being human. Also, it’s just natural and human that those emotions are affected or amplified with a world crisis like the one we are experiencing.

Stanislas Wawrinka shared a post on Instagram: "Needed a little pep talk today from throwback Stan to get me going 🗯😠🏋🏻‍♂️💦🎾🔙🏆♟ #SpotTheClues..." * Follow their account to see 873 posts.

COVID-19 has brought economical stress and difficulties to a lot of people. Hey, up to May 2, 2020 it has taken almost 230,000 lives according to the World Health Organization. So, Stan… we don’t know if it was intentional or not, but thanks for capturing the human condition in these difficult times in a creative and funny way.
